1. Certifications compatible with your product
Confirm that the supplier has the certifications your market requires: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 13485 (medical devices), RoHS compliance and processes in accordance with IPC-A-610 and IPC-620. Without these, regulated sectors don't even enter the conversation.
2. Real technical capability
Does the machine park keep up with the complexity of your project? Ask about SMT and PTH assembly, advanced packages (BGA, fine pitch), automated optical inspection (AOI), burn-in and conformal coating.
3. Attention to your volume
A common mistake is becoming the "small customer" of a large supplier. Assess whether the EMS serves high-mix, low-volume well — common in medical, industrial and defense — without leaving your project in the queue behind the big ones.
4. Engineering and intellectual property
If the partner will help with the design, define beforehand who owns the intellectual property. A good EMS discusses this transparently.
5. Traceability and audited process
Ask how batch-level traceability and process control work. In critical sectors, documentation and validation are not optional.
6. Supply chain under one roof (turnkey)
Whoever does engineering, PCB fabrication, purchasing and assembly under the same roof shortens the path and reduces failure points — instead of you coordinating three suppliers.
