Box build: from the assembled board to the final product

What box build is

Box build is the stage where the assembled board stops being a component and becomes a product ready for use. Instead of delivering only the PCBA, the manufacturer integrates the boards into the rest of the assembly — cabling, connectors, enclosure, labels and final-system testing. VRI Indústria Eletrônica, a Brazilian EMS founded in 1991, offers box build as a natural continuation of manufacturing, taking the product from the board to the closed box.

The name comes from the idea of delivering "the assembled box": the customer receives something functional, not a set of parts to assemble later.

What goes into a box build

The scope varies by product, but it usually includes:

  • - Board integration into the electromechanical assembly
  • - Cabling and harnesses (per IPC-620) linking modules and connectors
  • - Enclosure assembly and fixing of subassemblies
  • - Identification and traceability (labels, serial numbers, barcodes)
